PRODUCT DETAILS
The USS Intrepid (hull number CV-11) is an aircraft carrier belonging to the United States Navy and the third ship of the Essex-class aircraft carrier.
Intrepid began construction in 1941. Only a few days after construction began, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The United States formally entered World War II and accelerated the construction of aircraft carriers such as the USS Intrepid. In 1943, the "Dreadnought" was launched into service and began to participate in the Pacific War. After the war, the "Dreadnought" was decommissioned and put into storage. After the Korean War, the SCB-27C conversion began, and during the period, it was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA-11), and was returned to service in the Atlantic Fleet in 1954. Later, the "Dreadnought" underwent SCB-125 modernization and added an angled flight deck.
In 1962, the "Dreadnought" was reclassified as an anti-submarine aircraft carrier, the hull number was changed to CVS-11, and it continued to remain on duty in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Later, "Dreadnought" participated in the US space program, serving as the rescue ship for Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini 3 respectively. From 1966 to 1969, Intrepid made three trips to the Western Pacific to participate in the Vietnam War. Although the "Dreadnought" had been adapted as an anti-submarine aircraft carrier at that time, the US military temporarily adapted it as an auxiliary attack aircraft carrier, so the "Dreadnought" also sent aircraft to land to participate in the attack.
The "Dreadnought" was decommissioned in 1974 and was once ready to be sold for dismantling; but with the efforts of civil organizations, the Navy donated the "Dreadnought" to New York as a museum ship in 1981. The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum was officially opened on the banks of the Hudson River in 1982, and has since become an important landmark and tourist attraction in Manhattan. In 1986, the Intrepid was named a National Historic Landmark.
